Keyboard shorcuts – Gmail

If you have been yearning for a faster method of accessing and manipulating your mail in Gmail, you might just be aware of Gmail shortcuts, if you aren’t, well, Gmail does have a lot of helpful keyboard shortcuts.


You can turn these shortcuts on or off by going to

Settings (top right corner gear icon)->mail settings->General (by default)->Keyboard Shortcuts (third from the top)


here is a list of some of the basic shortcuts (case sensitive) available in Gmail.

Shortcut Key Definition Action
c Compose Compose a new message
/ Search Puts the cursor in the search box
k Move to newer conversation Opens or moves your cursor to a more recent conversation. You can hit<Enter> to expand a conversation.
j Move to older conversation Opens or moves your cursor to the next oldest conversation
n Next Message Move to next message in conversation view
p Previous Message Move to previous message in conversation view
o or <Enter> Open Opens your conversation
u Return to conversation list Refreshes your page and returns you to the inbox
e Archive
x Select conversation Automatically checks and selects a conversation so that you can archive, apply a label, or choose an action from the drop-down menu to apply to that conversation.
s Add star
r Reply
a Reply All
f Forward
<Ctrl>+s Save draft
# Delete


Remember that these shortcuts are case-sensitive.
